Lady's Work Table
Based on examples of sewing tables or work tables, this table is made of Mahogany, with drawer fronts veneered with bookmatched Curly Burl Maple. The drawer fronts are finished off with a Federal banding around the perimeter. The sides are back are veneered and inlaid to simulate the front of the table. The top is a solid piece of Crotch Mahogany. The lion's head pulls are typical Federal style hardware.
I had the opportunity to buy a stack of Curly Burl Maple veneer some time ago, I had some small lion head pulls left over from another piece, I happened to have a piece of incredible Crotch Mahogany, some banding from an old shop in Baltimore, and some 8/4 Mahogany for legs. All of this material inspired me to build a Federal piece and this Lady's Work Table is the result. Often, these tables would have had a bag hanging from the bottom which would have contained sewing supplies. The feet were often finished off with brass casters. I opted to exclude them. The finish is boiled linseed and a high sheen of hand rubbed shellac.
