Kauffman Fine Furniture
Justin Kauffman, Furnituremaker
The inspiration for this lowboy came from a well-known masterpiece pictured in Israel Sack's book "Good, Better, Best, Superior, Masterpiece." The original dates to ca. 1700. This piece, as well as the original, has a case completely veneered with Walnut burl. The four legs are turned and of the "trumpet" style. The drawer fronts are also veneered and with a herringbone Walnut banding that I made. Around the drawers I applied a double bead that I made using a scratch stock. The top is veneered with burl and a banding, also. The drawer pulls are exact reproductions of the originals with a plate, a bale, and two metal pins- each securing the bale to the plate and protruding through the drawer and then being bent over to secure the pin.
