Southern Chair

Mahogany side chair with honeysuckle carvings

Dickinson is the presumed surname of the maker of the original upon which this reproduction is based. It originated in Virginia and so is a Southern version of the Chippendale style of chair. After hand cutting and fitting the mortise and tenon joints holding the crest rail to the rear legs, I carved the acanthus leaves, the scrolls, and the honeysuckle that adorn the crest rail and splat. I also carved a ribbon into the splat. These design elements are all based on the original. The seat is genuine leather and the finish is oil, shellac, and wax.
