Flame Birch Hutch

Hutch constructed of flame birch with dentil molding and wavy glass

This commission started out as just a pile of really awesome lumber waiting for a design. The client who commissioned the piece loved the figure of the Flame Birch and asked what I thought should be made with it. I suggested a hutch with tombstone paneled lower doors and two drawers above them that would really show off the wood. The upper case, in my mind, would have arched wavy glass panels set off with carved pendants on the muntins. Above, the crown molding would be highlighted with dentil molding. The whole case would rest on a base molding and ogee bracket feet with fluted quarter columns at each side. My client agreed this sounded like a perfect use of the lumber. The hutch is an original design executed with the finest in traditional craftsmanship and strongly influenced by many elements of period embellishment.
