Chapin Highboy with Cartouche
Curly cherry highboy with carved shell, fretwork and cartouche
Inspired by my visit to the Yale University's Garvin Collection, I decided to use some Curly Cherry from Irion for a Connecticut River Valley Highboy. This piece is based upon the Eliphalet Chapin highboy in that collection. The cartouche, meant to resemble a rooster, is carved from a solid piece and the fretwork is also carved and shaped from a single piece. The moldings are all shaped by molding planes, carving tools, and chisels and the quarter column fluting is shaped by hand. A fantastic exercise in period construction and restrained ornament, this commanding highboy stands almost 81" tall and is 38" wide.
The highboy has an oil and hand rubbed shellac finish.
