Based on many examples of Bible boxes from colonial times, this box is made of riven black oak and its dimensions were dictated by the dimensions of the pieces that were riven.  It displays a common carved floral motif on the front panel. Though most Bible boxes were nailed at the corners, all four corners of this box are joined with hand cut dovetails.  The lid is attached with hand forged butterfly hinges. The finish is oil, asphaltum, and wax.
